When you visit us at Kältekammer Memmingen, your session is a calm and supervised process. Upon arrival, our trained staff will greet you and talk you through the procedure, answering any questions you may have. We will ensure you do not have any contraindications that would make the session unsafe for you.
You will then change into appropriate attire, which is minimal to allow for maximum skin exposure to the cold. We provide you with essential protective gear: gloves, socks and shoes, a headband to cover your ears, and a mask to protect your airways from the extreme cold. You will be dry and your skin must not have any open wounds.
Our studio uses a modern system with vortex cooling. You first enter a pre-chamber, set to around -60 °C, for about 30 seconds. This helps your body begin to acclimatise. Then, you step into the main chamber, which is maintained at a stable -110 °C. The air is completely dry, which makes the temperature feel surprisingly tolerable, more like a crisp sting on the skin than the damp, biting cold of a winter's day. You will stay in the main chamber for about three minutes, during which you can walk slowly in place. You are always in visual and verbal contact with our staff.
After your time is up, you step out. The sensation that follows is often described as remarkable.
