The experience itself involves a two-stage process. First, you will spend a brief moment in a pre-chamber set to a less extreme temperature, around -60 °C. This helps your body begin to acclimatise. Then, you step into the main chamber, where the temperature is a constant -110 °C. The air is cooled using an advanced vortex system, which keeps it very dry and still, making the cold feel more tolerable than a damp, windy winter day.
Inside, you will stay for approximately three minutes. During this time, you are encouraged to move slowly, turning on the spot or gently walking. You are never alone; our trained staff monitor you through a window and can communicate with you throughout the entire session. The three minutes pass surprisingly quickly. The sensation is one of intense, crisp cold on the skin, but it is not typically described as painful. Afterwards, you will step out and immediately feel the contrast. It must be stated clearly that there are no large scale clinical trials specifically investigating the effect of whole-body cold therapy on patients with gout. Therefore, we must look at research in related areas, such as other inflammatory rheumatic diseases and the general physiological effects of cold, and cautiously infer what the potential mechanisms might be.
A systematic review published in 2014 looked at the use of cryotherapy in various inflammatory rheumatic diseases [2]. The authors of this review analysed existing studies and concluded that cold applications appeared to reduce pain in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis [2]. They noted that while the results for pain were promising, the effects on disease activity and inflammation markers were less clear, highlighting the need for more robust, high quality research [2]. This provides a useful context: cold has a recognised history in managing pain for inflammatory joint conditions.
