Your Session at Kältekammer Memmingen: A Practical Walkthrough
Deciding to try a whole-body cold therapy session is a step towards proactively managing your wellbeing. Knowing what to expect can make the experience more comfortable and effective.
First, you will have a brief consultation and fill out a health declaration form. We will check your blood pressure to ensure the application is safe for you. This is also your opportunity to discuss your specific goals, such as addressing poor circulation in your hands and feet.
You will then change into appropriate attire. This consists of swimwear or comfortable underwear, thick socks, clogs, and gloves, which we provide. You will also wear a headband to protect your ears and a light surgical mask to warm the air you breathe. It is essential that your skin is completely dry and you have removed all jewellery.
Our studio uses a modern two-chamber system. You will first spend about 30 seconds in a pre-chamber set to a less extreme temperature of -60 °C. This helps your body acclimatise before you step into the main chamber, which is maintained at a brisk -110 °C. The cold is very dry, which makes it feel much more tolerable than a damp, windy winter day at 0 °C.
You will stay in the main chamber for a maximum of three minutes. During this time, you should move gently, perhaps by walking slowly in a circle and flexing your fingers. A trained member of our staff will be with you the entire time, observing you through a window and communicating with you. You are in control and can exit at any time.
After the three minutes are up, you will step out and return to the changing room. This is when the most interesting part begins for those with cold extremities. As your body begins to warm, you will likely feel a tingling, "pins and needles" sensation, followed by a spreading, deep warmth in your hands and feet. This is the vasodilation and the rush of blood returning to the periphery. Many guests find this feeling both surprising and deeply pleasant.
