Next is nutrition and hydration. After a long run, your immediate priority is to replenish the fuel you have used. This means consuming carbohydrates to restock your muscle glycogen stores and protein to provide the amino acids necessary for muscle repair and synthesis. A meal or snack containing both, consumed within an hour or two of finishing your run, is ideal. Equally important is rehydration. Here is what a typical session looks like. You will arrive and be guided through the simple process. You will change into minimal, dry clothing: shorts for men, shorts and a top for women. We provide you with gloves, socks and shoes, a headband to protect your ears, and a face mask to warm the air you breathe. This is purely for comfort and protection.

First, you step into a pre-chamber, which is cooled to around -60 °C. You will spend about 30 seconds here, allowing your body to acclimatise to the significant drop in temperature. From there, you move into the main chamber, set to a constant -110 °C. One of the most relevant studies for runners was conducted by Hausswirth and colleagues [7]. They took highly trained runners and had them perform a muscle-damaging trail running protocol. Afterwards, the runners were assigned to one of three groups for recovery: whole-body cold therapy, far-infrared therapy, or a passive control group. Over the next two days, the researchers tracked perceptions of pain and measured markers of muscle damage and inflammation. A session on Monday could serve as a 'reset' for the body, helping to alleviate the accumulated soreness from the weekend and preparing you for the week of training ahead.
