What the Research Shows
It must be stated clearly: there are currently no large-scale, randomised controlled trials that specifically investigate whole-body cold therapy as a primary treatment for insomnia. The scientific evidence is indirect and drawn from studies on related conditions. The findings offer intriguing clues but should be interpreted with considerable caution.
Much of the relevant research has focused on mood and mental health, which are deeply connected to sleep. One randomised controlled trial from 2020 looked at whole-body cold therapy as an add-on to standard medication for depression. The group receiving cold applications showed a greater improvement in depressive symptoms compared to the group receiving medication alone [1]. A smaller, earlier study also found that whole-body cold application, when used as an adjunct treatment, appeared to reduce both depressive and anxiety symptoms [3]. Given that anxiety and low mood are major drivers of sleep problems, it could be hypothesised that any therapy which helps to alleviate these symptoms might indirectly benefit sleep quality. However, these studies were not designed to measure sleep outcomes directly.
Other research has examined the effect of whole-body cold on fatigue and biological stress markers. One study involving patients with multiple sclerosis found that a series of ten sessions led to a significant reduction in the subjective feeling of fatigue [2]. While the fatigue in multiple sclerosis has a specific pathological basis, this finding is interesting because persistent fatigue is also the main symptom of poor sleep. Reducing the burden of daytime fatigue could potentially help to normalise the sleep-wake cycle. Another line of investigation concerns oxidative stress, a state of cellular imbalance linked to chronic stress and inflammation. A study on healthy men who underwent a series of ten whole-body cold sessions found a significant decrease in markers of oxidative stress and an increase in antioxidant capacity [5]. The limitations of this research are significant. Many studies use small sample sizes [3], focus on specific populations like athletes or patients with other conditions [2, 4], and have short observation periods. The placebo effect is also difficult to control for, as it is impossible to 'blind' a participant to the fact they are in a -110 °C chamber. Therefore, while the existing research is promising and points towards plausible mechanisms, it does not constitute proof that cold therapy improves sleep.
Your First Session: What to Expect in Memmingen
The idea of stepping into a chamber cooled to -110 °C can be daunting, but the process is straightforward, quick, and fully supervised. When you arrive at our studio in Memmingen, our trained staff will guide you through every step.
First, you will complete a health questionnaire to ensure there are no contraindications. You will then change into minimal, dry clothing, typically swimwear or shorts and a top. We provide you with gloves, socks and shoes, a headband to protect your ears, and a mask for your mouth and nose to warm the air you breathe.
You will first enter a pre-chamber, set to around -60 °C, for about 30 seconds. This helps your body begin to acclimatise. Then, you step into the main chamber. The cold is immediate and intense, a dry, crisp cold that envelops your skin thanks to our vortex cooling system. It is unlike any winter day in the Allgäu; it feels more like a tingling sensation than the damp cold you might be used to. You will be asked to walk around slowly and breathe normally for the duration of the session, which lasts between two and three and a half minutes. You are in constant visual and verbal contact with our operator.
As soon as you step out, the sensation is one of relief and invigoration. Your skin will tingle as blood rushes back to the surface, creating a pleasant feeling of warmth that spreads through your body. Many people feel energised and clear-headed immediately afterwards, a feeling that often gives way to a sense of deep calm and relaxation later in the day.
Safety First: Who Should Be Cautious About Cold Therapy?
While generally safe for healthy individuals, whole-body cold therapy is a powerful application and is not suitable for everyone. It is vital to be aware of the contraindications and to provide honest and complete information on your health declaration form. You should not use the cold chamber if you have any of the following conditions:
- Unstable hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Heart attack within the last six months
- Decompensated heart or respiratory disease
- Peripheral arterial occlusive disease
- History of blood clots (venous thrombosis)

Is there a best time of day to use the cold chamber for sleep support?
There is no universal rule, and individual responses vary. Some people prefer sessions in the morning, finding the invigorating effect helps them start the day with more energy and a clearer mind. Others prefer an afternoon session, feeling that the subsequent relaxation phase in the evening helps them unwind and prepare for bed.
Will I feel cold for the rest of the day?
No, quite the opposite. After you exit the chamber, your body's natural response is to rapidly increase blood flow to the skin to rewarm it. Most people experience a pleasant, lasting sensation of warmth and a feeling of being energised for several hours after their session.
Can whole-body cold therapy replace my sleeping pills?
Absolutely not. You must never stop or alter any prescribed medication without consulting the prescribing doctor. Whole-body cold therapy is a non-medical, wellness service that may complement your existing health plan, but it cannot and should not replace any medical treatment.
Is one session enough to notice a difference in my sleep?
